Prostate cancer is among the most prevalent cancer diagnoses for men in Canada, and support organizations are crucial in educating men about early detection, treatment options, and lifestyle changes that can improve outcomes. PROSTAID Calgary aims to enhance public awareness and understanding of the disease through its general meetings, offered free of charge to all.

With advancements in medical treatments, more men are living longer after a prostate cancer diagnosis. However, patients and survivors often experience long-term physical, emotional, and psychological effects from the disease and its treatment, such as urinary incontinence, bowel issues, anxiety, extreme fatigue, and PTSD.

To improve quality of life after a diagnosis, PROSTAID Calgary facilitates specialized monthly meetings for Warriors as well as Wives & Caregivers groups. These meetings create a community where patients and their families can network, share knowledge, and find emotional support to reduce feelings of isolation and depression on their journey with prostate cancer.

President of PROSTAID Calgary and prostate cancer survivor, Brad Sterling, says, “Our objective is to assist and support patients, families and friends by informing, empathizing and reassuring men on their journey with prostate cancer. By sharing our own experiences with cancer we lift our spirits and strengthen our resolve to fight for quality of life and a cure.”

The organization advocates for a strong provincial voice in matters relating to prostate cancer healthcare policies and provides on-hand resources for members. It publishes a monthly journal, The Digital Examiner, which is currently sent to over 1300 subscribers, and visitors to the website can find new information regarding prostate cancer research or support.

PROSTAID Calgary has served Calgary and surrounding areas for over 30 years, relying solely on private contributions to sustain and expand its initiatives.

Brad Sterling adds, “I have a supportive family and a well-informed support network of friends whom I met thanks to PROSTAID Calgary. They are invaluable. This is a marathon, and you cannot do it alone.”
