The traditional mystery trope would dictate that only someone with nefarious intentions could have spirited her away. However, in Johansen’s novel, this is subverted by adding a twist usually reserved for science fiction.

Lilli lives in the fictional town of Skyport in the Texas panhandle, which has earned a reputation for UFO sightings and extra-terrestrial encounters since its founding over one hundred years ago. Therefore, the townsfolk overwhelmingly believe in a very different theory: Lilli must have been abducted.

Johansen’s cynical police detective Caleb Carson investigates, convinced that the culprit must be an earthbound human suspect. The novel follows his encounters with townspeople spouting alien anecdotes and an intriguing young Christian woman named Treena Wood, who has a very different explanation for the town’s other-worldly visitors.
